New Years on the Grand 2k9

Even Ryan Seacrest gave Grand Rapids a shout out on New Years Eve. It was a page out of the Times Square playbook but executed with West Michigan flair - a giant lighted ball hung from a crane dropped to Rosa Parks Circle sometime around midnight.

Without plans of my own for NYE, I decided to join to 10,000+ folks bundled up in the cold that night. Because I shattered the screen on my iPhone earlier that day, I had to grab a real camera. I parked by Fountain Street Church and made my way down to the Monroe Mall around 9 p.m. By then, the entire skating rink was basically a dance party.

Downtown was packed. Lines at the bars. Lines at the coffee shops. Lines at the warming huts - it was cold. I am sure I ran into people I knew down there, but with the cold forcing people deep inside their hats, scarves and hoods - including me - everyone could stay incognito. By 11:30, I decided to get in place for the main event, the ball drop.

A couple minutes before midnight, the ball started down. It didn't get very far and BOOM, it was 2k9.

And BOOM, people started making out.

(They thought I worked for the Grand Rapids Press and were excited about being in the paper.)

By 12:30, the dancing and merriment died down, and I headed back to the car. I guess I spent NYE 2008 alone, but I don't really think so.

2k9 Poem

Hi 2k9. When you came, it was cold.
Me and 30,000 of my friends could see our breath.
It looked like we were smoking all night.
My glasses fogged up because my scarf was wrapped around my face.
Lots of people drank Starbucks/Bigsby's coffee/free stuff
Remember 2k7, when Beaner's changed its name to Bigsby's
Because it wasn't nice.
But thank you for showing up.
Lots of people kissed.
